How low our image has gone... from a head coach no less

Marshall is absolutely saying in that quote he wouldn't come to Wake. You don't build 2 programs with great success, go to the final four, then go undefeated the next year and jump to a mediocre program with limited resources. You jump to one of the top 5-10 programs with that resume. And him answering the question the way he did was just using us as leverage to get paid more when one of those programs come knocking.

I totally agree with this and also figure Marshall is content to bide his time at WSU. He is 51 so you figure he has 10-15 years left. He is from Greenwood SC and spent time as an assistant on the CofC bench under Kresse. When the SC job was open 2 yrs ago before Frank Martin was hired, he campaigned behind the scenes for the job as he had 5 yrs earlier when Darrin Horne got the job. However because he was such an outspoken ass, Eric Hyman never even bothered to interview the guy. Big mistake there by the Cocks but that's another story.

Anyway he can afford to wait another year or two and pad his resume. I figure the Holes, Louisville (in a second), IU (now that he has Midwest cred) and maybe a couple others would look to him as there coach. No way Dook would touch this guy.

I wish Wake could be in the running as he could really make some things happen in the Dash and get the Deacs relevant again in a hurry. DC membership would skyrocket overnight as someone else said, but I just feel its all wishful thinking. No way Wellman forks over 2 mil for a coach even if they begged to come to Winston. Its gonna be a mid level guy like Clawson just like it always has been.

marshall would have been absolutely perfect at nc state.

UNC isn't going to look to Marshall. They will get an established high major coach with UNC ties.

Trying to come up with a name that fits this description and blanking. I know there are a ton of UNC guys in the low-mid-major ranks though.

Just don't see it happening, whether Marshall could be bought or not.

Good guy and $2M+, maybe.

Prick and $2M+ never.

Just can't see Wake going that route.

I still haven't seen anything in that article that would suggest Marshall is a prick. Blunt and honest, yes, but just because he didn't go out of his way to kiss someone's ring doesn't make him a prick.

This. The guy can flat out coach. He has announced he is for sale. Now it is just a matter of negotiating price. Pay the man.

Exactly. WTH is the guy supposed to say? Would love to see New Bern or 22fan revise Marshall's statement to make it more acceptable (or "classy" or "whitebread" or whatever pussy LOWF label you want to put on it).

Even though most of you guys think we are made of money, we aren't. There are limitations to what we can do and you amateur detectives who think you know what our athletic budget is really dont have a clue.

Before this season started, everyone thought it would take an offer of $3M or so to get Marshall or Smart. I don't think anything has changed at this point. That would place the new coach at Wake within the top 10 salaries in the country.

Can we afford to pay $3M a year? I have no idea. Would we pay that much? I absolutely doubt it.

But if we went to Coach Marshall and offered him $15M over 5, I'd be fairly confident he would take it. And we should do it, no questions asked.

As I've stated before, the funny thing is we could have hired him for $1M a year or less if we had hired him in 2010. Now, the program is so fucked we have to pay a premium just to get a known winner to come here.

It has nothing to do with being made of money. It has to do with making wise investments. Investing $3m/year into Marshall will make a hell of a lot more money for the university than paying [Redacted] or another POS coach $1M/year.

If Wellman hires Marshall (or Shaka for that matter) deacon club membership will skyrocket. Donations will roll in. You hire any other donk and things will remain stagnant for quite a while.

MBDeac is right. If the "powers that be" really care about "Wake Will", "they will" make the investment necessary to immediately restore excitement to the program. If they hire one of those lesser known coaches, they can expect most of us to sit on the sidelines for a few years until we see how it goes.

They burned our successful basketball program TO THE GROUND. I'll be back when I'm convinced that they are committed to a rebuild that is serious about Wake once again having a program that is consistently in the Top 20.

Until then Ronnie can just continue to give away tickets and spout lies about attendance.

The string of quotes from Tin that thedeacfan put together above is revealing. It shifts from "we can't pay" to "we might could pay but we won't" to "we're in a position to perhaps not be able to pay because of AD incompetence." Would love to know from the crowd that sees Marshall as a pipe dream just which scenario is correct. And aren't any of the three fireable offenses?

Me too. The UNC tree is dry at the major level. They will have to go outside the family for the first time.

I can see them robbing Kansas again and taking Bill Self or dialing up Jay Wright from Nova.

Marshall (or maybe - maybe - Shaka) sells out Joel in season tickets the first year, and DC points actually matter again. The box suites are full and concessions are busy. He turns the program on a dime before the first game. No one else within our reach can do that.

The only established major coach with unc ties is Roy Williams.

UNC is getting Shaka.

Serious question: is Shaka even good enough to be hired by UNC? You're talking about at worst a top 3 job in the country and arguably the best. The last coach they hired held a top 5ish job for 15 years and went to 4 Final Fours and 2 title games. I understand that Roy's ties to UNC played a big part in that but I really think they will (and will have to) aim higher. They could hire basically anyone with the obvious exceptions of K, Pitino, Cal and probably Self.

You are probably right. I prefer Marshall to be honest.

Marshall's chip on the shoulder personality really is perfect for school like Wake Forest who is little brother to 2 blue bloods.

Unfortunately Marshall's personality really is awful for current Wake Forest when you consider who is making the hiring decisions. Which makes me cry.

hopefully we'll see some epic wake/marshall v unc/shaka matchups for yrs to come. espn will lap it up
