Looking at the BG depth chart, they do use a Rover (and also call the FS/SS the Whip and Stud, and one of the two LBs the Buck). Will be interesting to see who ends up as the Rover for us, as most other def positions seem reasonably set, but there is not a natural fit for Rover in the current secondary.
This is all subject to change given the new staff etc, but imagine the DL will be some combo of Floyd/Tylor/Looney/Banks/Levinson, Two LBs will be Chubb and one of the Lee/Virgile/Matthews group (maybe Jaboree Williams gets a shot as well), and secondary is Noel/KJ/Wooding/Janvion. At Rover, imagine could move one of the young LBs there or give Cameron Glenn a shot.
True, although with James Ward moving to slot WR, that would leave us pretty thin at safety.
We always seem to have "young talent" at LB and then after 4 years, they didn't have much of an impact. Justin Jackson is the latest example.
Agree we'll probably see a rover, kinda like how Grobe and Hood used Caron Bracy in the 3-3-5. It will depend who the match ups. Would have loved to see a guy like Chip Vaughn in that rover role.
Thomas Brown...the 6'3-215 pound freshman from Georgia played well -- showing excellent speed and power in run support. Very impressed with this guys athletic profile. As far as a Bandit type is concerned.
Jackson was retained because (a) he has an outstanding track record as a D position coach and (b) the incredible group of LB's and DE prospects he brought in last year -- Ejiofor, Lamot, Dunn, Jackson to go along with Lee, Virgile, Howell and an already good looking trio a year older with Kevis, Donatell, and Teddy Matthews.
That represents more potential than at any time I have followed WF. The last staff petered out in player development...but they could usually spot raw ability as good as anybody out there -- exempting the 2 plus years they tried to program-pipeline.
So we will be implementing a 4-2-5. Initially I don't like it because we are so thin up front (weight wise). But I trust clawson. I believe duke ran it this year and was pretty successful and doubt that they are THAT much bigger than us up front.
Thomas Brown 6-3, 215, a freshman last year, who I think red shirted.
Maybe not, but if a kid gets contacted by a guy and their parents google him, they may not like what they see. Weird to make this hire before the probe comes out. Our side must be confident nothing will come out of it.
Is this coach good enough and impactful enough to counter backlash we might get? We're not talking about an offensive or defensive genius, or a recruiter who will be a difference maker. I guess that's my concern. Do his benefits outweigh the bad press?
Really don't believe there will be much if any bad press over the hire of a position coach at Wake Forest.

Exactly
The 4-2-5 looks more vulnerable to the run. If the big guys on the D-line don't get the runner going up the middle, it is only safety/corner size guys to make the play. Gonna need a big safety type to play that 5th DB spot. From a quick look, the only guy on the roster who has the size on papers is Thomas Brown 6-3, 215, a freshman last year, who I think red shirted. Perhaps one of the faster young line backers plays this position. There's gonna be a log jam at linebacker. Wake will have over a dozen players returning that are listed as either inside or outside linebackers.
Not sure why the rush for this hire. With the investigation underway, why not wait a few weeks until it's finished? This doesn't sound like a guy who would get snapped up somewhere else right now. If he is "Clawson's guy," he should still be available to Clawson in two weeks or so. It would look better if the "nothing to see here" report was out before the hire.
I believe South Carolina runs a 4-2-5 with faster linebackers and a hybrid S/LB. They did well against the spread teams they faced (UNC, Missouri, Clemson) but were gashed up the middle by Wisconsin in their bowl.
