MBB Game 12: ACC Opener - Hokies Visit The Joel - Saturday 2pm - ESPN2

This was 2005. Downey throat slashed on an and one made 3 at FSU the next game where making the free throw would've won the game and completed a massive comeback. He missed, we snapped the longest FT streak in ACC history, we lost, and he got a one game suspension from the ACC. It got talked about on PTI
Well wah-wah; that's the most Wake forest thing ever...except it's not, though I haven't thought about the "throat slash" in forever.
Still a huge Downey fan. My son, who was just getting into Wake sports at the time, always referred to him as "The Fabric Softener".

Positively the worst arena I've ever been to. A huge dump of a place
Our old Memorial Coliseum was an even worse dump: lighting so bad that you couldn't show games on t.v. w/o certain cameras, and the cig smoke with no ventilation to speak of left a noxious, grey cloud over the whole facility. Aisles were narrow, and the seats were almost on top of the court. And the parking lot was so dark that after-game fights and vandalism of vehicles of opposing fans was commonplace.
Come to think of it, that place was so bad that it was actually a good place for the home team.

This is post-game hype for sure. Dare I say this team seems a bit more.... steady than the '22 team?

Too early to tell, I know. I never really bought in until this result.

WF is on the right track since the second-half of the Charleston Southern game and I see consistent effort now almost throughout each game.

I'm ready to be hurt again.

Even at the time it was absolutely hilarious when it happened. It actually made me feel better about losing because the whole way it played out really was the most Wake thing ever, and Downey out here throat slashing at the FSU bench is GOAT status

Haven’t seen any comments on the crowd here. Drove up from Charlotte with my three little ones. Did the $15 student section deal, great seats. We had lunch at a brewery downtown beforehand, left the brewery at 1:30, figured no problem, the Joel is five mins away. Ended up missing tipoff by about five mins because there was so much gameday traffic. That was the first sign that there might be a decent crowd. Thought it was a solid turnout - lower bowl basically full, upper deck maybe 35-40%. Had to be close to 10k people there. Should only increase if we get more games like today!

We all agree Joel is too big for us. Most of us think the money can be better spent in other ways. Glad it was a good crowd

Yeah absolutely. I would imagine if the NFL needed to sort out 363 teams though they'd probably find a different way as well hah
OK, but you’re using the NFL to justify one component of the NET and then blowing off the NFL to dismiss a criticism of the NET.

I'm not dismissing the criticism of the NET - I said reasonable minds can differ on whether we want to have a system that evaluates the season equally or weights the last few weeks more heavily. That's why I included that the NCAA is using a different way than just record of teams to send them to the tournament.

I personally do not think you should be rewarded more heavily for playing better your last 10 games than your first 10 games if we're picking the best teams over the course of the season (which I think SHOULD be the criteria) but I'm also very much in favor of having a selection committee to parse through instances where the metrics do not capture the entire picture (Reid and Monsanto out for instance)

hopefully we can win ourselves off the bubble this year. I feel like this team has the talent now that we got the waiver. Crazy how big a difference a month makes for our perception of Coach and the team, but it's ok to be hyped cause that was a solid win that we really need

I was very happy to see us not jacking up 3s from the get-go...
VT has awful rim protection. Lynn Kidd has become a nice scorer but he's not preventing anybody from scoring at the rim.

When you have three guards who can get to the paint against most defenders, a skilled 4, and now a center you can throw the ball for post-ups ... your offense should look exactly like Wake's did today.

I know it doesn’t matter now, but this team would be scary good with Bobi and Damari. I actually think we would be favorites in the ACC and in a lot of people’s final four bracket. Love how far we have come under Forbes. He’s going to take us to the promised land. Deacs!
